Pasta: an essential food in the Mediterranean diet

Pastas Romero. La pasta y la dieta mediterranea

What is it about pasta that everyone loves? It never fails to be in the pantry of any home, due to its versatility and ease when cooking.

Pasta is one of the most appreciated foods of the Mediterranean diet. This diet is internationally recognised as the healthiest and is the one recommended by the WHO to enjoy a good quality of life and prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

However, the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN) warned a few weeks ago about the decline in following the Mediterranean diet associated with the current lifestyle, and stresses the importance of following it “to live longer and better”.

And that is where “Pasta”, combined with other foods so typical of the Mediterranean diet (meats, fish, vegetables, nuts, olive oil…), plays a fundamental role.

There are many benefits that eating pasta on a regular basis brings to our health. Due to its carbohydrate-rich composition, it constitutes an important source of energy, necessary for our daily activities. In addition, its fat content is minimal and it favours the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal system. For all these reasons, the Mediterranean Diet Foundation recommends its daily consumption.
